Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation are terms that are often bandied about in the press but what actually do we mean by them? And why are some people so excited about mindfulness?
Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation are terms that are often bandied about in the press but what actually do we mean by them? And why are some people so excited about mindfulness? And what does the science really tell us about its potential power?
Dr Maret Dymond-Bassett will explain how mindfulness is a natural trait and we all have the ability to become more mindful, training our minds to be in the present moment, through mind body meditation practices, rather than dwelling in the past or being caught up in the future. Learn more about how over time practising mindfulness can become a way of life, enabling us to be more connected with and compassionate towards ourselves and others.
Cultivating mindfulness has been shown through quality research to be an investment in our physical and mental wellbeing at home and at work, enabling the enhancement of wellness, joy, creativity and flourishing. Recent studies suggest that practising mindfulness may shape the brain, developing areas important for focus, empathy, compassion and emotional regulation and decreasing areas responsible for fear and perceived stress.
Dr Maret Dymond-Bassett is a mindfulness teacher, trainer of mindfulness teachers, a researcher and Clinical Psychologist. She has worked within industry, academia and the NHS. She is the Director of New Forest Mindfulness and a Course Tutor on The Master of Studies in Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) at the University of Oxford.
Maret holds two doctorates, one in clinical psychology (DClinPsych) from the University of Southampton and a research doctorate (PhD), in perinatal psychology from the University of Reading. As well as mindfulness work, Maret continues to offer psychological therapy and is particularly interested in exploring how Mindfulness Based Approaches and Cognitive Analytical Therapy may be used together to help people work through difficulties and then go onto flourish and live a life worth living.
Maret has been practising mindfulness meditation for over 15 years and for over 10 years, has taught mindfulness courses for adults and children, within a variety of settings, including the NHS, other public sectors, the community and in the workplace. She has had a long standing interest in the application of mindfulness for parenting, from pregnancy through childbirth, to new and established parenthood, including how mindfulness might relate to the prevention of post-natal depression.
Maret is also interested in the importance of wellbeing in the workplace, in how we gain and maintain the elusive work-life balance and mental and physical health in the fast paced, information-technology based and demanding environments within which we live and work.
