Wood award for commoning champion

Earlier this year, the New Forest National Park Authority approached the New Forest Marque with a special request: to recommend a local craftsperson to create a bespoke trophy for the brand-new Commoning Champion category at the New Forest Awards, to be presented at this year’s New Forest Show.

We were proud to put forward Kristy Gray, a talented young wood crafter with deep family roots in the New Forest and one of our newest New Forest Marque members.

Kristy, founder of Kristy Gray Designs, is known for her beautifully handcrafted homeware, made using timber sourced sustainably and locally from the New Forest. This project was particularly meaningful for Kristy, as her Granny was a commoner, making the trophy a personal tribute to the heritage and tradition of the area.

The finished trophy is a stunning collaboration between Kristy and BearWood, crafted from a blend of Oak, Walnut, Yew, and Lime woods. It truly embodies the values of sustainability, craftsmanship, and New Forest tradition.

Different timbers considered during the design process

We’re thrilled to see young local talent like Kristy being recognised and celebrated for their role in keeping the heritage and values of the New Forest alive.
